Bird Boxes in Dunnikier Park

17 September 2013

From Jim Crosbie of Dunnikier Park Improvement Group: The attached pictures show volunteers Pat Crosbie and Mike Bennett from Dunnikier Park Improvement Group as they help to put up nest boxes near Dunnikier House Hotel.
“ This is the first phase of a project that will eventually see around forty nest boxes located through-out the park. We have taken advice on where to site them from Stuart Milne who, as well as being a professional falconer, has a wealth of knowledge on wild bird habitat. We have also had a lot of help from staff and students at Kirkcaldy High School as well as participants in the Community Payback Scheme who built the nest- boxes and supplied them to us. As well as nest sites for small birds we are hoping to be able to put up boxes that will be able to accommodate kestrels and owls ,” said Pat Crosbie of Dunnikier Park Improvement Group.

Dunnikier Park Improvement Group: Press Release

Members of Dunnikier Park Improvement Group took advantage of the long summer evenings to take a look at the development work that has recently taken place in the park.  Improvements to drainage on the golf course and a major tree planting project have been completed as well as the construction of a new wetland and wild meadow area.

“With its golf-course, woodland paths and extensive wild life areas people in Kirkcaldy are lucky to have such a wonderful park right on their door step”, said Sue Bennett, Chairperson of Dunnikier Park Improvement Group.

The aim of the group is to encourage more people to use the park.  It is hoped that this will be achieved by providing more information, improving facilities and developing an environment that will benefit wildlife and bio-diversity.

The group is supported by Kirkcaldy Parks Manager Scott Clelland and staff from Fife Council.  Its members include local people, staff and students from Kirkcaldy High School as well as representatives from Dunnikier Cricket Club and the environmental group, Greener Kirkcaldy. The group also has the support of the business community including bird-of-prey expert Mr Falconry, and management and staff from Dunnikier House Hotel.

Dunnikier Park Improvement Group is keen to encourage as wide participation as possible.   The next meeting is to be held on Wednesday 2nd October at 6:30p.m in Dunnikier House Hotel and all those interested are welcome.

Did You Know?

Dunnikier House History

The original Dunnikier House now know as Path House appeared to be a Laird's house although may have earlier origins.

It was built by John Watson in 1692 and is three storeys high. The upper floor features dormer windows and the initials IW (Latin name for John is Ioannes) EO for his wife Euphan Orrock and the date 1692 are carved on pediments above them.
John Watson and his wife may have been living here before this date as in 1684 they provided land to the north west of the house as a burial ground for the inhabitants of Dunnikier so there may have been an earlier building.

Sometime between 1695 and 1703 the house was passed onto the Oswald family. The Oswalds of Dunnikier were a political dynasty. James Oswald the elder politician died in 1715 and James Oswald the younger politician became Lord of the Treasury in 1760. His son James Townsend Oswald succeeded his father's seat in the House of Commons and built the new Dunnikier House (now the Dunnikier House Hotel) further inland around 1790 to replace the Dunnikier House.
In 1891 the house was renovated when it became the manse for Dunnikier Church and in 1978 was renovated again for Fife Health Board nurses residence. In 1990 it was converted into the Path House Medical Centre.

Dunnikier House Hotel are pleased to be a part of the Dunnikier Park Improvement Group. Lots of ideas are being discussed to move the improvements forward for the next year. Wondering if anybody who remembers any history about the Dunnikier Park or Dunnikier House could get in touch with Lynn on 01592 268393 or PM us and Lynn can get in touch with you.

A NEW group has been formed to help transform Dunnikier Park into an oasis for nature and introduce new attractions.

Fife Council’s parks and countryside staff have been working hard over the past few months developing plans for the town park which include a wildflower meadow, native fruit trees and linked ponds.

The innovative project, which is involving local schools, represents a significant investment from Fife Council and will help to address long-standing issues with Dunnikier Park such as poor drainage.

Sue Bennet, chairman of the new Dunnikier Park Development Group, said: “Dunnikier Park Improvement Group is a newly formed organisation involving Fife Council, local community groups and residents. Our aim is to make Dunnikier Park a facility to rival the other two parks in the town.

“Dunnikier Park has always been the poor relation but by involving as many interested parties as possible we would like to make the park the place the public want to visit by introducing attractions such as wildlife, wetland areas and improved woodland walks.

“We hope to attract local interest and draw in ideas from as many different sources as possible. We are pleased to say that Kirkcaldy High School is already heavily involved.

She added: “It is our aim in the future to take care of existing improvements and with help from all interested groups and individuals plan and carry out new ideas for the park.”

Scott Clelland, area parks team leader for Kirkcaldy, said: “In Kirkcaldy we are proud of our diverse range of parks, open spaces, woodlands and coastal fringe. Working with a variety of interested groups, we all work hard to improve the quality and accessibility of our facilities so we can provide a positive impact on the well-being of the local community. Adding wildlife to our green open spaces can be an exciting opportunity for people to get involved and make a difference to the environment.”
